00 — Inspection vs test

Inspection, test and maintenance.

Three different jobs, one working system.

01

Why the difference matters

The fire sprinkler system, like other systems, needs to be inspected, tested and maintained to ensure it will function in the event of a fire. According to NFPA, the leading factors in unsatisfactory sprinkler performance include failure to maintain the operational status of the system: inadequate maintenance, obstruction of the water distribution, and a frozen system.

What each one means

An inspection is a visual examination. A test is a hands-on, periodic physical check of how the system performs. Maintenance is the work that keeps equipment operable, plus repairs. Use the switcher above to see each definition with examples from the NFPA 25 table.

02

Who should do it

Fire sprinkler inspections should be conducted by a qualified person. We recommend that testing and maintenance be done by a licensed sprinkler company.
